Gifted / Talented

WHAT DOES FLAG VIEW GT LOOK LIKE?

5th and 6th grade students at Flag receive gifted and talented services Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during ER.  They miss no in class work when they come to GT.

A pullout program model is used at Flag View. Students come out of their regular classrooms to attend GT class.

ECSD Gifted programs are primarily enrichment programs providing students will activities and projects they do not get in the regular classroom.

WHAT WE'RE DOING IN GT

Technology is integrated into every project students complete during GT.  This year we will also focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) projects.

6th grade students are continuing an engineering project they started last year in 5th grade.  They are designing and building balsa wood bridges.  Because some of the 6th grade students have already completed their bridge, I am giving them one class period a week to work on the bridge.  The other students will have class time to catch up on their reading in the book Flu.  During the rest of the week the 6th grade students are working on a research unit about the 1918 Flu Pandemic.  They will be completing a webquest, reading the nonfiction book, Flu: The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus That Caused It, and creating a Keynote Presentation among other projects.

5th grade students begin the year with a research project about the Japanese Interment Camps during WWII.  We began by watching a video on the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  Students will be completing several projects along with reading the nonfiction book, Farewell to Manzanar.
COMMUNICATION

Communication is always an important element in any school program.  With that in mind, I have decided to use an app called Remind.  This app enables me to keep you up to date on what we're doing in GT, special events, concerns, etc. through text and email.

I sent home a flyer that explains the app and a form with your cell phone number and email address that needs to be returned to school.

If you have questions about the app please give me a call or email me or go to remind.com to read their information.
